Three academics from the University of Winchester were among the guests at a Royal Garden Party to recognise those who work in Education and Skills.
Dr Laura Clarke, Director of the Institute of Education, Professor Emile Bojesen, Director of Research and Innovation, and Dr Emma Nottingham, Head of the School of Law, attended the event at Buckingham Palace.
Their invitations reflected the achievements of the University in delivering Outstanding Initial Teacher Education and for developing a thriving research culture.
Laura was introduced to the Queen who was interested to hear about the University’s teacher training programmes (rated Outstanding by Ofsted).
This sentiment was echoed by His Majesty the King when he addressed a group of guests, including those from Winchester, and thanked them for their contributions to education.
Dr Clarke said: “It was such an honour to be invited to attend a Royal Garden Party and to meet the King and Queen. The sun shone, the bands played and the afternoon tea was lovely. Those of us who join the education profession do so to make a difference to the communities we work with, not for the thanks. It was lovely however, for our work to be acknowledged and to be thanked by the Queen.”
The guests represented schools, colleges and universities including Scouting, and Duke of Edinburgh award. They were entertained by military band who played a selection of popular tunes and the guests were free to wander around the extensive Buckingham Palace gardens.
